Coastal Roots - "I" am Helping Out My Environment

Planting over 600 trees was a crucial part of the "I" am H.O.M.E. project. We went to Jean Lafitte Barataria Preserve and worked in groups to plant trees that will help protect our wetlands and our homes.

Getting connected with nature for three days was an amazing experience. We discovered that getting in touch with Mother earth was a goooooooood feeling! Magic spots were inspirational for writing and realizing our role in "Helping Out My Environment".

Students got to dig through 20 million year old dirt donated from Aurora Phosphate and discovered shark teeth, sea urchin spines, coprolites, shells, and much more! They loved sorting through their fossils and comparing the sizes of the shark teeth they discovered.

Pumpkin Day Activities

Students completed activities with their pumpkins that linked to Language Arts, Science, Math, Art, and even Social Studies. Students predicted whether their pumpkins would sink or float in a huge tub of water, found the circumference of their pumpkins and the length of their stems, made inferences on the relationship between the ribs and size of their pumpkins, wrote pumpkin poetry, and painted their pumpkins. Some students even painted their pumpkin to look like the world! It was a pumtastic day!

In Mrs. Avegno and Ms. Landreneau's Language Arts classes, the students are reading Harry Potter and were put into groups according to houses based on the Harry Potter novel. The students eagerly awaited as the Sorting Hat selected their houses.

Introduction to Environmental Stewardship

Students had the opportunity to skype with environmental leaders, post to a blog, discuss their carbon footprint, use flip cams and digital cameras, feel a variety of Louisiana animal pelts and see bird beak skulls, vote with Activotes in a flip chart presentation, and collect data from our Coastal Roots plants in a rotational schedule. These activities were to introduce what the "I" means in stewardship. The students had a great time at all stations.

Red Barn Farm pays MAAS a visit!

The Red Barn Farm came to visit all of the students of Metairie Academy on September 15th and 16th. Students had opportunities to hold baby chicks, rabbits, and ducklings. They got to walk and interact with a goat, see a variety of chickens, touch an 18 day old calf and pet a miniature horse. Mrs. Avegno even managed to catch the squealing pig! Students really enjoyed this field trip that came to them!!!

"Show Me What You Know!"

Students use dry erase boards to write answers to show Mrs. Suazo what they know in Math!! It is easy to make a quick assessment of understanding using these. Students enjoyed working in cooperative groups to put whole numbers and decimals on index cards in order fro least to greatest and vice versa.

A visit from Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the EPA

Thanks to an email request from Mrs. Herbert, Lisa Jackson (Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency) paid a visit to Metairie Academy on August 26, 2010 to speak to our fourth and fifth graders. Ms. Jackson praised our students for being environmental stewards in programs such as LSU Coastal Roots and for learning how to be take better care of the Earth through the Earthkeepers program. It was an amazing experience for our students to be validated for their hard work by such an important government official.

Welcome to Fourth Grade!

We are very excited to be teaching our fourth graders this year and have a plethera of engaging and exciting activities planned. The students will grow academically, socially, and physically as we progress throughout the year. The students will become environmental stewards as they participate in programs such as Earthkeepers and Coastal Roots. The students will be immersed in technology throughout the year and have opportunities to use digital cameras, flipcams, I-Pod touches, webcams, laptops, netbooks, and a variety of programs such as: Photostory, Glogster, Blogger, Wikis, Powerpoint, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Renzulli, First in Math, and many more.
